About the Fender Eric Clapton Artist Stratocaster
The Eric Clapton Stratocaster has been in production since 1988, made in the USA at the Corona, California plant. It has an alder body in gloss urethane, a one-piece maple neck and board with a soft V profile and a satin finish, a 25.5 inch scale, a 9.5 inch radius, 22 vintage-style frets, a 1.650 inch (42 mm) nut and Kluson-type tuners. The first tone knob is a TBX control with a center detent, working as a normal tone below it and adding brightness above; the second is an active mid boost of up to 25 dB, powered by a 9-volt battery. The tremolo leaves the factory blocked with a removable wood block.
The pickups mark the generation. Examples from 1988 through 1999 carry three Gold Lace Sensors; examples from 2005 on carry three Vintage Noiseless pickups. Serials carry the year (SN5 on a 1995, SZ7 on a 2007, US20 on a 2020), but an early SE serial can read a year or more before the build, so check the date stamps on the neck and body. Weighed examples come in at about 7.1 to 8.2 lb (3.2 to 3.7 kg), and measured 1990s necks run about 0.86 to 0.89 inch deep at the first fret. It comes in a tweed hard case with a strap, a cable, the arm and a certificate. Colors include Black, Olympic White, Pewter and Torino Red, with a metallic green on early ones. Ask whether the wood block comes with it, and whether the tuners, pickups and bridge parts are original.
