About the Fender American Vintage '62 Stratocaster
The American Vintage '62 Stratocaster is Fender's US-made reissue of the 1962 Strat: an alder body in nitro lacquer, a one-piece maple neck with a rosewood board, a 7.25 inch radius, 21 vintage frets, a 25.5 inch scale and a nut about 1.65 inch (42 mm) wide. Three American Vintage '57/'62 single coils run through a master volume and two tones, and the switch is the three-way type of 1962, with a five-way switch in the case. The series began in 1982 at the Fullerton plant and moved to Corona, California, in 1985; guitars from the 1980s have black-bobbin pickups. Neck, body and pots carry dates.
Weighed examples come in at about 6.8 to 8.4 lb (3.1 to 3.8 kg), most 7.3 to 8.2 lb, with necks about 0.81 to 0.84 inch deep at the first fret and 0.90 to 0.92 inch at the 12th. The 1980s ones came in a tweed case; others come in a brown Fender hard case with a gold lining, holding the five-way switch, the ashtray bridge cover, the arm, a strap and paperwork. The nitro checks with age, blue finishes drift toward green, and chips at the neck pocket are a frequent flaw. Owners often fit the five-way switch, other pickups, a bone nut or new frets. Three-color sunburst is the usual finish; custom colors include Fiesta Red, Olympic White, Surf Green and Ice Blue Metallic. Thin Lacquer versions with a thinner nitro finish were ordered for Japan in the early 2000s, and dealers commissioned limited Thin Skin runs.
