Fender American Deluxe Stratocaster

About the Fender American Deluxe Stratocaster

The American Deluxe Stratocaster is the US-made Strat Fender introduced in 1998 as a step above the American Standard. It has an alder body (ash under some finishes), a maple neck with a maple or rosewood board, 22 medium jumbo frets, staggered locking tuners and a two-point tremolo with a pop-in arm and solid steel block saddles. Most have a Modern C neck with a satin finish; a tinted '50s V neck was also offered.

Guitars from 1998 to 2003 have Noiseless pickups on a plain five-way switch and a 9.5 inch radius board. From 2004 it gained Samarium Cobalt Noiseless pickups and the S-1 switch, a push button in the volume knob that adds five more pickup combinations, and most from then on have a contoured neck heel. For 2010 came N3 Noiseless pickups, a compound radius board running from 9.5 to 14 inches and rewired S-1 combinations. Earlier necks have abalone dots, later ones pearloid. Serials from the 2000s start DZ followed by the year's last digit.

Weighed examples come in at about 7.4 to 8.5 lb (3.4 to 3.9 kg), with necks about 0.82 to 0.84 inch deep at the first fret. Original cases are tweed or molded with TSA locks. Check the neck pocket for hairline finish cracks. Replacement pickups and rewiring are common, sometimes with the S-1 taken out, and necks get swapped, so compare the neck and body date stamps and ask for the original parts.
