About the Gibson ES-335TD Norlin Era
The Norlin-era ES-335TD is a semi-hollow with a laminated maple body around a solid maple centre block, two humbuckers and a bound rosewood board with small block inlays and 22 frets. Dated examples from 1972 to 1981 were made in Kalamazoo and have a volute behind the nut, with the serial and Made in USA stamped on the back of the headstock.
From late 1972 to 1975 the centre block stops short of full length. Dated 1970 to 1973 examples have a mahogany neck and 1976 to 1981 ones a three-piece maple neck. The nut is the narrow 1 9/16 inch on 1970 to 1975 examples and 1 11/16 inch on 1979 to 1981 ones. Early pickups are T-Tops with a patent sticker, many 1972 ones with Gibson-logo covers; from 1976 to 1981 come epoxy-backed Super Humbuckers (tarbacks) and a factory coil-tap mini switch on the treble horn. Six-digit serials only narrow the date to a span of years, and pot codes are often hidden under solder; on 1978 to 1981 ones the eight-digit serial gives the year in its first and fifth digits.
Weighed ones run about 7.4 to 8.5 lb (3.3 to 3.9 kg); necks measure 0.76 to 0.82 inch deep at the first fret, filling out to 0.94 to 1.08 at the 12th. Many have been converted from the factory trapeze to a stoptail or Bigsby, refretted, and fitted with new tuners and knobs; check for a repaired break around the volute. Walnut arrived in 1969, Wine Red from 1976; black was a rare special order.
