About the Gibson SG Special
The SG Special is the plainer SG, made in Nashville: a solid mahogany body, a set mahogany neck and a rosewood board with dot inlays, 22 frets on a 24.75 inch scale with a 12 inch radius, two volume and two tone controls and a three-way switch. Pickups and hardware vary by year. Original 1960s examples have two P-90s and a Brazilian rosewood board. Examples from the 1990s and 2000s carry a 490R and 490T humbucker pair, a Tune-O-Matic bridge, an unbound board (ebony on some 1990s ones) and tulip-button Gibson Deluxe tuners. The 2015 model, for Les Paul's 100th birthday, has an adjustable brass zero-fret nut and a neck about 1.8 inch wide at the nut, against the usual 1 11/16 inch (43 mm). The 2018 model has two mini humbuckers and a natural satin finish; it and the 2015 have 24 frets. The current Original Collection version brings back two P-90s with a compensated wraparound bridge, a bound board, white-button tuners and hand-wired controls with Orange Drop capacitors, and comes in a hardshell case with a strap, a multi-tool, a polish cloth and paperwork.
Weighed examples run about 6.1 to 7.3 lb (2.8 to 3.3 kg), most between 6.4 and 7 lb. Necks measure about 0.80 to 0.85 inch deep at the first fret and 0.90 to 0.99 inch at the 12th, the current version at the slim end. On older examples, check the neck joint and headstock for repaired breaks. Swapped bridges and pickups are the usual changes, so ask whether the originals come with it.
