About the Gibson J-45 Custom
The name covers two designs. The rosewood J-45 Custom, with dated examples from 2012 to 2017, has an AA-grade Sitka spruce top over Indian rosewood back and sides, hand-scalloped X bracing and a mahogany SlimTaper neck joined with a dovetail, on a 24.75 inch scale with a 1.725 inch nut and a 12 inch radius. A floral abalone and pearl inlay sits on the headstock; abalone also trims the rosette, the fingerboard markers and the bridge wings, and the top has herringbone trim. Hardware is gold Grover Rotomatic tuners, a firestripe teardrop pickguard, a Tusq nut and saddle and an LR Baggs Element pickup. Finishes are Vintage Sunburst or Antique Natural, and 2016 models have the year engraved on the truss rod cover. Weighed examples come in at about 4.8 to 5.1 lb (2.2 to 2.3 kg). It is made in Bozeman, Montana, and comes with a Gibson hardshell case and its papers.
The later Custom Shop J-45 Custom is a different design: an Ebony finish over a Sitka spruce top and mahogany back and sides, multi-ply binding, a bound headstock with a split diamond inlay, a bound ebony fingerboard with pearl block inlays, gold Grover Rotomatics, an ebony bridge with brass pins and an LR Baggs Session VTC pickup, in a hardshell case.
