About the PRS Silver Sky John Mayer Signature
The Silver Sky is John Mayer's signature PRS, out since 2018 and built in Maryland, modeled on his and Paul Reed Smith's favorite 1963 and 1964 instruments. It has an alder body in high-gloss nitro and a bolt-on maple neck; the rosewood board has 22 frets on a 25.5 inch scale with a 7.25 inch radius, small bird inlays and a bone nut about 1.65 inch (42 mm) wide. The frets are PRS's acoustic-guitar wire, smaller than on its electrics, and the neck carve is the 635JM-R, slightly rounder in the shoulders; measured necks are about 0.86 inch deep at the first fret and 0.98 inch at the 12th. Three 635JM single coils run through a five-way switch, one volume and two tones, and positions 2 and 4 cancel hum. The steel tremolo with Gen III knife-edge screws sits flush on the body, so it only lowers pitch. The headstock is reversed, the vintage-style tuners lock, and the truss rod adjusts at the headstock.
Weighed examples come in at about 6.8 to 7.8 lb (3.1 to 3.5 kg). It ships in a padded PRS gig bag, not a hard case. The first colors, such as Onyx, Frost and Tungsten, have a contrasting color in the lower horn scoop; later ones include Dodgem Blue, Midnight Rose and Venetian Blue, plus satin nitro Moc Sand and, from 2024, Faded Black Tee. The serial usually opens with the year's last two digits. The nitro can crack, with small splits at the neck pocket; let it warm to room temperature before opening the case.
