About the Tokai ST-45
The ST-45 is the ST-42 Springy Sound with the 5,000-yen option, a rosewood-veneer board or a colour, of the late 1970s, a bottom-of-range poly-finished Strat; owners assume the ceramic-magnet pickups of the lowest grades, but U-stamped grey-bottoms turn up inside, the grade 45 is stamped on the board at the first fret on a rosewood one, and the name carried on into the 1982 Goldstar Sound ST-45. The pickguard was single-ply; a three-ply guard on a maple-neck example is a later swap. Owners date theirs to 1979, and a Goldstar-era one to 1982.

What owners have said elsewhere
Paraphrased from 5 discussion threads among 6 owners, 2021-2023. No names, nothing quoted.
A 1979 is called custom-shop level despite the poly, its owner's number two behind an AST62, once someone gets to play one it is over, they are just so good, a rosewood-board owner loves the neck, another calls it stunning to look at and to play, and a 1982 Goldstar ST-45 has been played to death and is said to be as good as a Fender, as almost every Tokai owner says.
