The typical used price is the median of 14 used sales observed in the last 24 months, with outliers removed and the figure rounded. An observed sale is often the last asking price rather than a confirmed hammer price.

About the Tokai ST-80
The ST-80 is where the Springy Sound range, Tokai's late-1970s Stratocaster replica, reaches its full specification: nitrocellulose lacquer where the ST-60 and below are polyurethane, a soft V neck with a 7.25-inch radius, and the E-stamped grey-bottom single coils, the hand-wound type-A set that pairs with an A-stamped pickguard. Bodies are two-piece sen (Japanese ash) or alder, with the occasional one-piece; necks are one-piece maple in the 1954 style or rosewood-veneered in the 1964 style. Tokai's own three-stage five-position switch feels like a three-way, and the pots are 250k. Until 1980 the grade was stamped into the fingerboard behind the last fret, then moved to a sticker on the back of the neck. Stevie Ray Vaughan wanted one, and Tokai used his image in its advertising until he became a Fender artist.
Owners date theirs from 1978 to 1982. The Springy Sound name ended with the 1982 Fender lawsuit: the black-block-logo guitars sold in 1983 are the last Springys re-decaled from 1981-82 stock, and the Goldstar Sound TST-80 followed in 1984, the first 80-grade to get DiMarzio VS-1 pickups, which the Springy ST-80 never had. Factory colours ran from the two-tone Golden Sunburst and three-tone Yellow Sunburst to Olympic White, Blonde, Black and Natural, with metallic red and blue as a 5,000-yen option that technically made an ST-85. Two tells of a fake are a slab rosewood board and pearl dot markers: a Springy rosewood board is always a veneer and its dots plain white.

Price history
Every recorded sale, one point each: 63 of them, placed by the day the ad went up. The line follows the middle of the sales around each point, with the middle half behind it, and breaks wherever nothing sold nearby. Condition is mixed, so some of the spread is a mint against a fair rather than the market moving.

What owners have said elsewhere
Paraphrased from 97 discussion threads among 36 owners, 2021-2025. No names, nothing quoted.
Owners date theirs from 1978 to 1982, and few models in the archive get warmer words: the holy grail, one of the best Strat-style guitars made, a neck that is a joy to hold, sustain that outlasts a JV Squier's; several name it their favourite Strat and say it is the last guitar they would let go, two owners withdrew theirs from sale while photographing it, and those who sold regret it. It is light: a one-piece example weighed 7 lb (3.2 kg), and one owner finds his lighter than his JV. The dissent is about price rather than the guitar: several point out that the ST-80 shares its woods and neck with the ST-60 and the Goldstar TST-80 and is paid for its decal, and one owner of both prefers the feel and chime of his JV 115. Originality divides the room, some call the stock pots and caps mediocre and swap them, refret to taller 6105 wire or fit another bridge, while others keep every screw original and say the guitar lost its character with humbuckers in. The Japanese nitro of the period is a thin, harder mix that wears through rather than checking, so a worn-through back is playing wear.
