About the Tokai ST-50
The ST-50 is the everyday grade of Tokai's Springy Sound Stratocaster replica: the U-stamped grey-bottom single coils (the production ST-B set, with a B-stamped pickguard) where the ST-60 gets the hand-wound E set, a slim U neck with a 7.25-inch radius, a polyester or polyurethane gloss finish, Deluxe-stripe vintage tuners and the soldering plate that the ST-42 and ST-45 below it lack. From the ST-50 up the build is otherwise the same guitar, an alder body in two or more pieces (ash on some late-70s examples), the wide vintage bridge and a bone nut, with only finish, neck profile and electrics stepping up by grade; nitro and the V neck arrive at the ST-80. Before 1982 it came two ways, a 1958-style maple neck or a 1964-style rosewood-veneer board; the 57 and 62-slab models only arrived with the Goldstar. Stevie Ray Vaughan played a Springy Sound and appears with one on the cover of Texas Flood.
Owners date theirs from 1978 to 1987, with the model running on into the 1990s. The black-block-logo guitars are the transition: built in 1982, mostly shipped to the UK and sold there in 1983 after the Fender dispute, they are Springy Sounds with a different decal, and the Goldstar Sound TST-50 that followed in 1983-84 is the same guitar under a new name, later exported with an altered headstock as the AST. Custom colours, metallic green, metallic blue, flamingo orange, sonic blue, were a 5,000-yen option that made an ST-55; they are brushed polyurethane under a gloss coat, and the brush strokes show in the light. The grade sat on an oval sticker on the back of the neck that is usually gone: the pickup stamps decide it (U for the 50, E for the 60 and up), the ST-42 and 45 lack the soldering plate, and the body, neck and switch carry date codes that place a guitar to the month.

Price history
Every recorded sale, one point each: 89 of them, placed by the day the ad went up. The line follows the middle of the sales around each point, with the middle half behind it, and breaks wherever nothing sold nearby. Condition is mixed, so some of the spread is a mint against a fair rather than the market moving.

What owners have said elsewhere
Paraphrased from 55 discussion threads among 49 owners, 2019-2025. No names, nothing quoted.
Owners date theirs from 1978 to 1987, and the praise is out of proportion to the grade: more than one calls it the best Strat they have played, high-end Fenders included, several say they would not trade theirs for anything and that it goes with them to the end, and the early-80s Tokais are called well-made gigging guitars. The reservations are small, the U neck is a bit skinny next to an ST-80's V, and one custom-colour 1982 is the heaviest of its owner's Tokai Strats. Owners split on modification: some fitted hotter pickups or stripped a finish decades ago and still play them daily, one regrets losing the original pickups, others keep everything original, and a relic job on a poly ST-50 was called unconvincing and value-destroying.
