Boss RC-5 Loop Station

About the Boss RC-5 Loop Station

The Boss RC-5 Loop Station is a compact loop pedal with a clear display, a built-in drum and rhythm machine, and memory for many separate loops. It records in stereo, connects over USB so you can import backing tracks and update the firmware, and has an input on the back for an external footswitch, for example a dedicated stop switch. It draws around 170mA and sits in the Boss RC line above the older RC-3 and below the two-track RC-500 and larger RC-600.

Owners are fond of the RC-5, with more than one flatly saying they love it and calling it one of the best loopers you can get. It is beginner-friendly, one who had never looped before found the learning curve gentle and the controls simple after a few sessions. The feature people rate most is the built-in drum machine, which owners say transformed their practice, letting them rehearse tightly at different tempos. Practical tips: place the looper last in your chain, before the DI, so it captures everything you play through your other effects, use the rear footswitch input to add a dedicated stop switch, and make sure your supply can feed its roughly 170mA. The main limitation owners raise is the single footswitch: for hands-free live looping some prefer the RC-500, which adds a separate stop switch and multiple tracks (verse, chorus, bridge) plus its own drum tracks, and heavy users step up to an RC-600. For practice, songwriting and simple live loops, though, the RC-5 is a common recommendation.
