Fender Highway One Stratocaster

About the Fender Highway One Stratocaster

The Highway One Stratocaster is a US-made Strat from Fender's Corona, California factory, introduced in 2002. It has an alder body, a maple Modern C neck with a satin finish and a maple or rosewood board, a 9.5 inch radius, 22 frets, a synthetic bone nut 1.6875 inch (42.9 mm) wide and a vintage-style six-saddle tremolo. The standard case was a Fender gig bag.

The first series, built from 2002 to 2006, has the small '50s-style headstock with two string trees, medium jumbo frets, vintage-style single coils with staggered poles and a thin satin acrylic lacquer. In 2006 it was updated with a large '70s headstock, jumbo frets, hot alnico 3 single coils with a reverse-wound middle pickup, a steel tremolo block in place of zinc, parchment plastic parts and a satin nitrocellulose finish. The earliest guitars lack the Greasebucket circuit, which rolls off treble without adding bass, though some owners added it; on guitars with it, the second tone knob works on the bridge pickup. Guitars from 2006 were sold as 60th Anniversary models. Serials start with Z and the last digit of the year.

Weighed examples come in at about 7.4 to 8 lb (3.4 to 3.6 kg), with necks about 0.81 to 0.85 inch deep at the first fret. The thin finish chips and marks easily and rubs to a shine where handled. Check the neck pocket for cracks. Pickup swaps are common, sometimes with extra routing for a bridge humbucker, as are locking tuners and aftermarket steel tremolo blocks. An HSS version was also made.
