About the Fender John Mayer Stratocaster
The John Mayer Stratocaster is Fender's US-made signature model, made from 2005 to 2014. It has an alder body in urethane, a maple neck with a satin back, a gloss headstock face and a thick C profile, an African rosewood board with a 9.5 inch radius and 21 Dunlop 6105 frets, a 25.5 inch scale and a synthetic bone nut 1.650 inch (42 mm) wide. The truss rod adjusts at the heel. Three Big Dipper single coils, wound for this model, run through a master volume, a tone for the neck pickup and a tone for the middle and bridge. The American Vintage synchronized tremolo comes with five springs fitted and no back plate, and the string tree sits farther from the nut. The headstock has a '50s spaghetti logo on the front and the signature on the back, with vintage-style Fender/Gotoh tuners.
Weighed examples come in at about 7.4 to 8.4 lb (3.4 to 3.8 kg), most 7.5 to 8.2 lb, with necks about 0.82 to 0.83 inch deep at the first fret. Earlier ones came with a padded Incase gig bag, later ones with a G&G hard case lined in blue plush; the case candy is a strap, a cable, the arm, the ashtray bridge cover and paperwork. Fender's customer service can date one from its serial number. Owners often replace the saddles or the pickups. The standard finishes are 3-Color Sunburst with a tortoise pickguard and Olympic White with a mint green one; limited runs include Shoreline Gold with a competition stripe and the black Black1.
