About the Fender American Vintage Stratocaster '57
The American Vintage '57 Stratocaster is Fender's US-made reissue of the 1957 Strat, and it is no longer made. The first ones were built at the Fullerton plant before production moved to Corona, California. It has an alder body (ash on White Blonde), body and neck in nitrocellulose lacquer, and a one-piece maple neck with a walnut skunk stripe, a V profile, a 7.25 inch radius, 21 vintage frets, a 25.5 inch scale and a nut 1.650 inch (42 mm) wide. Three American Vintage single coils with beveled magnets run through a master volume, a neck tone and a middle tone on a three-way switch. The bridge is a six-saddle synchronized tremolo with an ashtray cover, under a white single-ply 8-hole pickguard.
Examples from the 1990s often have a slim C or U neck rather than the soft V. The neck heel carries a pencil date, and the neck pocket and the pots are dated too. Weighed examples come in at about 7.1 to 8.2 lb (3.2 to 3.7 kg). The usual case is a tweed hardshell, and the case kit holds the arm, the ashtray cover, a five-way switch, a strap, a cable and paperwork. The arm and the rear spring cover are the parts most often missing, and the single-ply pickguard cracks at the screw holes and can warp. Owners often fit the five-way switch, other pickups (Fender Custom Shop, DiMarzio, Seymour Duncan) or new pots and capacitors. Two-color sunburst is the standard finish; Black, Surf Green and Ocean Turquoise were custom colors.
