About the Gibson Flying V '67
The Flying V '67 is Gibson's USA-made reissue of the 1967 Flying V. Regular production began in 1990, a return to the plain mahogany 1967 version. Some examples are dated 1989, and those carry Patent Number humbuckers; the usual pickups are uncovered ceramic humbuckers, a 496R at the neck and a 500T at the bridge. The mahogany body has a set mahogany neck with a slim 60s-style profile and a rosewood board with dot inlays, 22 frets on a 24.75 inch scale with a 12 inch radius and a 1 11/16 inch (43 mm) nut. Two volume and one tone control sit in a triangle with a three-way switch, beside a Tune-O-Matic bridge and stopbar, Gibson Deluxe tuners with keystone buttons and a large white pickguard. The usual finishes are Cherry, Ebony and white; white examples have an ebony board in place of rosewood, and the white yellows toward cream with age.
Necks measure about 0.80 to 0.85 inch deep at the first fret and 0.87 to 0.90 inch at the 12th; most weighed examples come in at about 6.8 to 7.7 lb (3.1 to 3.5 kg). Examples from the late 1980s and 1990s come in a brown Gibson hardshell case, usually pink lined. Many were sold new through Gibson's Japanese distributor, some with its hang tag or papers. The gloss nitro often shows checking and can mark where it rested on stand rubber or tape. Owners most often change the tuners (often for locking ones), the pickups and the pots, and some keep the original parts with the guitar.
