About the Gibson Flying V Faded
The Flying V Faded is Gibson's lower-cost, stripped-down V, built in Nashville, USA, the saving made mainly in a thin satin nitro finish. It has a mahogany body and set mahogany neck with a slim rounded profile, 22 frets on a 24.75 inch scale with a 12 inch radius and a 1 11/16 inch nut. The usual setup is two uncovered ceramic humbuckers (a 496R at the neck, a 500T at the bridge), two volume and one tone control with a three-way switch, a Tune-O-Matic and stopbar, Gibson Deluxe tuners with green keystone buttons and a white pickguard. Worn Cherry is the usual finish. It came new in a padded Gibson gig bag, not a hard case.
The board is the change to know: examples from 2002 into 2003 have an ebony board with crescent moon inlays; later ones have rosewood with dots. Dated examples run from 2002 to 2012. The 2016 limited run differs: Vintage Trans Amber satin, two Dirty Fingers+ humbuckers, one volume and one tone, no pickguard and Grover tuners. Weighed examples run about 6.6 to 7.8 lb (3.0 to 3.5 kg), and necks measure about 0.77 to 0.84 inch deep at the first fret and 0.84 to 0.91 inch at the 12th. The thin finish wears through at the edges, takes buckle marks on the back and polishes to a semi-gloss where it is handled; some have been refinished or given a gloss coat. Owners often swap the pickups (EMG actives among them), tuners and bridge, so ask whether the original parts come with it.
