About the Gibson Les Paul Special TV
The Les Paul Special was introduced in 1955 as a step up from the Junior: the same slab mahogany body with a second P-90 at the neck, its own volume and tone, a three-way switch and a bound neck. TV Yellow is a translucent limed-mahogany finish chosen to look right on black and white television, and the grain shows through it. The 1950s originals that turn up usually have the bridge or tailpiece and other hardware replaced.
The current version arrived in 2019. It has a gloss nitro finish, a full, rounded Vintage '50s neck with a bound rosewood board, 22 medium jumbo frets and dot inlays on a 24.75 inch scale with a 12 inch radius, a 1.695 inch Graph Tech nut, a compensated wraparound bridge and white-button Vintage Deluxe tuners. The two P-90s run to two volumes, two tones and a three-way switch, hand-wired with Orange Drop capacitors. Weighed examples from 2019 on come in at about 7.1 to 8.1 lb (3.2 to 3.7 kg).
Custom Shop 1960 reissues, from the 2000s, have Kluson Deluxe tuners, CTS pots and bumblebee capacitors, come in a Custom Shop case with a certificate, and were also offered in TV White, many in a VOS finish. 1990s examples came in a brown Gibson hardshell case; examples from the 1970s to the 2000s show finish checking. Across all eras, replaced tuners (often Grovers, sometimes leaving enlarged holes), an intonatable bridge or new tailpiece in place of the wraparound, an added Bigsby and aftermarket P-90s are the usual changes.
