The Les Paul Custom is Gibson's top Les Paul, made in Nashville: a mahogany back with a carved two-piece maple top, a long-tenon mahogany neck, a bound ebony board with 22 medium-jumbo frets and pearl blocks on a 24.75 inch scale, multi-ply binding, gold hardware and a Tune-O-Matic with stop tailpiece. Dated examples run from 1986 to 2026; those from 2009 on are Custom Shop builds with a CS serial, a 9-hole weight-relieved back, a Corian nut, Grover tuners and a Modern Medium C neck.

Dated examples from 1986 to 1991 often carry Tim Shaw PAF-style or Bill Lawrence-designed humbuckers, those from 1998 to 2023 a 490R neck and hotter 498T bridge. Some Custom Shop examples, one dated 2016, have a Richlite board instead of ebony. Weighed examples from 1987 to 2008 run about 9.6 to 11.7 lb (4.4 to 5.3 kg), most over 10 lb; later Custom Shop ones 9.4 to 10.1 lb (4.3 to 4.6 kg). Necks measure 0.82 to 0.86 inch deep at the first fret and 0.97 to 0.99 inch at the 12th. On older eight-digit serials the first and fifth digits give the year (81427505 is a 1987).

Custom Shop examples come with a Custom Shop hardshell case, accessory kit and certificate of authenticity; older ones with a Gibson hardshell case. Ebony and Alpine White are the usual colors, then Wine Red. Alpine White yellows toward cream, gold plating tarnishes and older finishes check. Refrets, new nuts and swapped pickups are the usual changes; ask whether the original parts come with it.
