About the Martin Standard Series D-35
The D-35 came out in 1965, and its three-piece back let Martin use rosewood too narrow for a two-piece back. It is a 14-fret dreadnought with a solid Sitka spruce top, solid East Indian rosewood back and sides and light 1/4 inch non-scalloped X bracing. The ebony fingerboard is bound, with 20 frets and pearl dots on a 25.4 inch scale.
Before 2018 it has a low-profile neck with a 1 11/16 inch (43 mm) nut, white binding and a raised gold-foil logo on the headplate. For 2018 the X brace moved forward to about one inch from the soundhole, still 1/4 inch and non-scalloped, and the neck became a Modified Low Oval with a High Performance Taper and a 1 3/4 inch nut; the same update brought an aging-toner top, antique white binding, a faux tortoise pickguard, a script logo and white plastic bridge pins. The 2025 refresh kept the bracing non-scalloped but in the Golden Era pattern, with a GE Modified Low Oval neck, a thinner fingerboard, a vintage-style heel, an angled nut, a GE belly bridge and bone pins. Sunburst and Ambertone tops are offered besides the natural one.
Weighed examples come in at about 4.5 to 4.85 lb (2.0 to 2.2 kg). Recent ones come in a Martin molded hardshell case with warranty papers, a manual and hang tags. Common additions are a strap button at the neck heel and an aftermarket pickup. Older ones often come with disclosed repairs, so ask what has been done.
