About the Boss MT-2 Metal Zone

The Boss MT-2 Metal Zone is a high-gain metal distortion pedal with a powerful three-band EQ that includes a sweepable parametric midrange. There is so much tone-shaping on board that it behaves almost like its own preamp, and it can even be used as an EQ or boost. There is a Waza Craft version, the MT-2W. Its EQ is complex, so it takes time to dial in.

What owners have said elsewhere

Paraphrased from 732 discussion threads among 17 owners, 2024-2025. No names, nothing quoted.

Few pedals split a room like the Metal Zone. Detractors call it processed, fizzy, even a trash can, and plenty simply do not get on with it; a committed camp insists it is a great, even the best, distortion pedal, if you take the time to learn it and ignore the haters. What both sides agree on is that the whole pedal lives in its EQ. It has a powerful three-band setup with a sweepable parametric mid, so much control that it acts like its own preamp, and getting a good sound means working it: set your amp clean, start every knob at noon and make small changes, use the mids around 1 to 2 o'clock for a woody Marshall bark, cut the fizz (an EQ pulling roughly 400 and 800 Hz helps a lot), and run a noise gate. Owners also debate placement: many find it shines in the amp's effects loop, where it works as a preamp, or straight into a clean or solid-state amp, and with the gain at zero it doubles as an EQ or clean boost for another dirt pedal. If the stock gain and the can-of-angry-bees fizz put you off, a mod is the common fix (Keeley, Analogman, or the DIY Simple Dog) to rein it in so it does lower gain and takes overdrives well; there is also the Waza Craft MT-2W, and budget alternatives like the EHX Metal Muff Nano get into the same territory.
