About the Epiphone Sheraton II

The Sheraton II is Epiphone's dressed-up thinline semi-hollow, introduced in 1986: a laminated maple top, back and sides around a mahogany center block, a set laminated maple neck in a SlimTaper C carve, a bound rosewood board with pearl and abalone block-and-triangle inlays, 22 medium jumbo frets on a 24.75 inch scale with a 12 inch radius and a 1.68 inch nut, a vine headstock inlay and gold hardware. Two humbuckers run through two volume and two tone controls and a three-way switch, with a Tune-o-matic bridge and a stopbar tailpiece where the original Sheraton had a Frequensator. Dated examples from 1997 to 2014 most often carry Epiphone Alnico Classic humbuckers. Weighed examples come in at about 8 to 9.2 lb (3.6 to 4.2 kg).

Where it was made matters. It was built in Korea, at the Samick, Saein and Unsung factories, until about 2008; production then moved mostly to China. On Korean ones the serial begins with the year, followed by two digits for the month. The earliest, from 1986 into the early 1990s, have an Epiphone by Gibson headstock inlay, and some dated 1992 to 2000 have Gibson on the truss rod cover.

Owners often fit new pickups and wiring, Grover tuners, or a Bigsby in place of the stopbar; ask for the original parts. Expect worn or tarnished gold plating on older ones. Many used ones come with an Epiphone hardshell case. Vintage Sunburst, Natural and Ebony are the usual finishes, with Wine Red also seen.
