The Epiphone Les Paul Standard has a mahogany body with a maple top, usually a plain or flamed veneer, a set mahogany neck, a bound board with 22 medium-jumbo frets and trapezoid inlays, cream binding, a 24.75 inch scale, a 1 11/16 inch nut, two humbuckers and a Tune-O-Matic with stopbar. Dated examples from 1996 to 2020 have a slim 1960s-style SlimTaper neck.

Dated examples from 1996 to 2003 come from Korea; their serials start with a letter and the two-digit year (I03031374 is a 2003). Later production moved to other Asian plants, China among them. Some, dated 1999 and 2001, were built in Japan by Fujigen for the Japanese market, with Gibson's open-book headstock and a long neck tenon; others have Epiphone's clipped-ear headstock with the Les Paul Model script in gold. Dated Korean examples from 1996 to 2001 have vintage-style tuners; those from 2009 to 2015 have Grover tuners and Alnico Classic humbuckers, often an Alnico Classic Plus at the bridge. The board is rosewood on dated examples from 1997 to 2015 and pau ferro on those sold new around 2018 to 2020. The LockTone bridge and stopbar lock in place, so they stay put at string changes.

Weighed examples mostly run about 7.8 to 9.3 lb (3.5 to 4.2 kg). Regular finishes include Ebony, Cherry Sunburst, Metallic Gold and Pelham Blue, with limited editions such as Silver Sparkle, Aqua Marine Burst and Red Royale.
