About the Tokai Love Rock LS-120

The LS-120 was the top of Tokai's Les Paul-style range at the turn of the 1980s, the point where the flagship features come together: a nitrocellulose finish, the steeper headstock angle of the higher models, and DiMarzio PAF humbuckers fitted at the factory, something only the LS-100, LS-120 and LS-150 got. The number is the launch price in yen, ¥120,000, not a grade, which is why a later guitar with a higher number is not automatically a better one.

The same guitar wore three headstock names: Les Paul Reborn, Reborn Old (a few months in 1980) and Love Rock from 1980 onward. Some early ones carry a solid two-piece flame maple cap rather than a veneer. Hardware is metric, so a replacement ABR-1 bridge needs metric posts, and 1980 examples carry double-ring tuners. Finishes seen include Old Sunburst (the factory name), Cherry Sunburst and Violin Finish / Lemon Drop.

Every recorded sale, one point each: 16 of them, placed by the day the ad went up. Too few sales to draw a trend through them without inventing one, so the points speak for themselves. Condition is mixed, so some of the spread is a mint against a fair rather than the market moving.

What owners have said elsewhere

Paraphrased from 39 discussion threads among 43 owners, 2021-2026. No names, nothing quoted.

Owners date theirs from 1979 to 1982, and the tone is overwhelmingly warm: workmanship, sustain and how well the nitro has aged come up again and again, and more than one owner calls it the best Tokai ever made. Two weighed examples land between 3.6 and 3.75 kg. Two things are checked before anyone calls one a keeper: whether the maple cap is solid or veneer (pull a pickup and look at the cavity wall), and whether the DiMarzios are still in it, the stock pickups divide the room, with some owners swapping in PAF-style sets and reporting a clear improvement and others saying leave them alone. Not everyone is converted: one long-time owner sold a '79 because it did not out-sing his other high-end Japanese Les Pauls, while granting that nothing else ages like it. The advice for a buyer is to aim at 1979-1980 rather than at a high model number.
