About the Tokai LS-75

The LS75 was the entry to the made-in-Japan Love Rock line from the late 1990s to about 2010, a Vintage Series guitar whose number is the 75,000-yen list price of the day. It is built to a price in the wood and the hardware rather than the work: a three-piece African mahogany back (a three-piece top on some), a poly finish, zinc saddles and a zamak tailpiece where the Premium models have brass and aluminium, and Gotoh MK2 PAF pickups. It came in solid colours, gold top, black and red, plus violin finish and cherry sunburst, with quilt (LS75Q) and flame (LS75F) tops and a soapbar LS75S; it is in the 1999 catalogue and by 2009-11 had become an uncatalogued option for dealers, the cheapest Japanese Les Paul on offer. Above it sat the two-piece-back catalogue model, LS85 in 2010, renamed LS92, LS98, LS100, LS115, LS128 and LS136 as the yen price rose, and LS-101 under the new owners' numbering from 2023. The UK version is the ULS-75, with a small dimple in the headstock because the open-book shape cannot be sold there; Japanese-market guitars keep the full shape, and a two-screw truss-rod cover marks the Japanese-made ones. Owners date theirs from 2001 to 2010; a 1981 LS-75 All Gold with soapbars also exists and is called super rare.

Dating and identification: the first two digits of the serial give the year, but the 2010 range overlaps 1981, the 2010 guitars carry Made in Japan printed at the foot of the headstock, which 1981 guitars never had. The model is pencilled or stamped in the neck-pickup cavity, hit or miss, and the three-piece back shows at the seam by the rear strap button. Stock tuners sit in 8 mm push-in bushings; Kluson Revolutions went straight on for one owner and were slightly short for another, who fitted Wilkinsons.

Every recorded sale, one point each: 10 of them, placed by the day the ad went up. Too few sales to draw a trend through them without inventing one, so the points speak for themselves. Condition is mixed, so some of the spread is a mint against a fair rather than the market moving.

What owners have said elsewhere

Paraphrased from 35 discussion threads among 50 owners, 2021-2026. No names, nothing quoted.

The entry Japanese Love Rock gets the same praise as the dear ones: better than the Gibson Standard its owner had before, at half the price; wiping the floor with a 1974 Custom and a 1972 Deluxe; on the level of an LS160 once the hardware is upgraded; and, since every Japanese Tokai comes off the same jigs in the same plant, carrying all the essentials of the brand, though one 2005 needed two hands to lift off the wall. The dissent is thin: one player does not like Tokai Les Pauls at all, and another had a beautifully built Love Rock that was dead and unresponsive. The Gotoh MK2 pickups divide owners: some keep them as an old late-50s Les Paul sound, others call them Tokai's one weak point, a muddy, hot neck pickup without the airy treble of an unpotted PAF, and fit Area 59, Seymour Duncan Seth Lover or Antiquity, DiMarzio PAF or Gibson 57 Classic sets, sometimes with CTS pots and paper-in-oil capacitors.
