About the Gibson Les Paul Standard Norlin Era
The Norlin-era Les Paul Standard has a mahogany body with a carved maple top, two full-size humbuckers, a bound rosewood board with trapezoid inlays, 22 frets, a 24.75 inch scale and a 1 11/16 inch nut. Before 1976, while Gibson's main Les Paul was the mini-humbucker Deluxe, it was only a special order; it returned to the catalog in 1976.
Dated 1974 examples have the layered pancake body and a three-piece mahogany neck. From 1977 to 1982 the body is solid, often one-piece mahogany; most from 1976 to 1982 have a three-piece maple neck, and mahogany necks turn up again from 1982 to 1985. A volute sits behind the nut from 1974 to 1981. Pickups are patent-number T-Tops from 1974 to 1978 (a sticker on 1974 ones, stamped later), then Tim Shaw humbuckers from 1980 to 1985. Chrome Gibson tulip tuners appear from 1977 to 1982, the Nashville bridge on 1977 and 1978 ones. From 1977 the eight-digit serial gives the year in its first and fifth digits and the day in the three between: 82573837 is September 14, 1983. Pots often date from the year before.
Weighed examples run about 9 to 11.4 lb (4.1 to 5.2 kg), about half over 10; necks measure 0.79 to 0.85 inch deep at the first fret and 0.95 to 1.05 at the 12th. 1978 and 1979 ones came in the chainsaw case. The low, wide factory frets are often replaced; Duncan or DiMarzio pickups and Grover tuners are the usual swaps. Some are stamped SECOND or SEC on the headstock (factory seconds).
