About the Gibson Custom Shop Inspired By Slash '87 Les Paul Standard VOS

The Custom Shop Inspired By Slash '87 Les Paul Standard, known among owners as the SVOS, is Gibson's 2008 replica of the artist's 1987 Standard: a run of 400 in VOS finish, sold alongside a Tom Murphy aged version, the only two official Custom Shop replicas of that guitar. It has a three-piece maple top like the late 80s Standards, Seymour Duncan APH-1 Alnico II Pro humbuckers, 500k volume pots where the original has 300k, an aluminium tailpiece and no fret nibs, and it shipped with a black Beardmore leather jacket in L or XL only. Gibson called it Inspired By because replica relic signature models were still rare in 2008.

The best-priced as cards, a row of them; every other ad as a line, by ask. Each ask is the seller’s own number; the platform’s mark opens the listing. Each one says when we last confirmed it at its source: the price and availability are from that visit, so check the marketplace before you go.

Every recorded sale, one point each: 13 of them, placed by the day the ad went up. Too few sales to draw a trend through them without inventing one, so the points speak for themselves. Condition is mixed, so some of the spread is a mint against a fair rather than the market moving.

What owners have said elsewhere

Paraphrased from 122 discussion threads among 39 owners, 2020-2025. No names, nothing quoted.

Owners who keep one say the weight and tone are very much the artist's, that it is better built than a USA 87 Standard, and that every SVOS should be at least a very good instrument; one who had to sell his never found a guitar that felt as good, and with the AFD and the Snakepit it is the most sought after of the Custom Shop runs. The critics, many of whom own real late 80s Standards, say the three-piece top seams and the logo are wrong, that 80s wood and craftsmanship are superior, and that the VOS colour is too light; asked to choose between an 87 Standard and the 2008 VOS, nearly everyone picks the 87, and several tell buyers a real 1986 to 1989 three-piece Standard is cheaper and closer. Against the 2008 Goldtop it plays heavier and clunkier. The jacket adds little, and the VOS sheen, once polished, cannot be brought back.
