About the Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul Custom
These are Les Paul Customs built by the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville: the regular model, with a matched 490R neck and 498T bridge humbucker pair, and historic reissues of particular years, the '54, the '57 and the '68. All have the Custom appointments: a bound ebony board with mother-of-pearl blocks, multi-ply binding on the top and back, and a split diamond headstock inlay.
The reissues follow their year. The '54 has a body carved from one piece of solid mahogany, with no maple top. The '57 has unpotted Custombucker Alnico III humbuckers, and both 1950s years use Kluson Waffleback tuners and full neck carves, a chunky C or D or a rounded medium C. The '68 puts a maple top on a mahogany back and has two humbuckers. Across the reissues the bodies have no weight relief, the neck is set with a long tenon in hide glue, and the hardware is a nylon nut 1.687 inch (42.85 mm) wide, an ABR-1 bridge and a lightweight aluminum stop bar. Finishes are VOS, nitro lacquer buffed to a dull, gently aged sheen with lightly aged parts, or Murphy Lab aging from Ultra Light to Heavy. Weighed examples come in at about 8.6 to 9.9 lb (3.9 to 4.5 kg). Each comes in a Custom Shop hardshell case with a certificate of authenticity.
