About the Gibson Custom Shop Slash Signature Appetite For Destruction Les Paul Signed, Murphy Aged
The aged and signed AFD is the top of the 2010 Custom Shop Appetite run: 100 guitars aged by Tom Murphy and hand-signed by the artist, the first 50 signed at a closed photo session at the Hollywood Guitar Center. It replicates the Derrig-built copy heard on the album and was his main live guitar in the early 2010s. Owners describe it as light and very resonant, one example at 3.94 kg. Plain VOS examples that were hand-signed at shows also circulate; they are a different guitar, and factory VOS finishes carry faint to no wear.

Those who have played it call it the best Les Paul they have ever had in their hands and the best sounding of the artist's Custom Shop models: in recorded sound-offs against the aged and signed Jessica and the Snakepit it takes most of the votes for its bite, definition and deep tone, and an owner of both keeps it as his best guitar. Not everyone picks it: a few preferred the Snakepit's warmer, grittier voice or the Jessica as more organic, the player who ran the tests found the Jessica the more comfortable neck, and one owner likes his unaged VOS much more. Heavy checking on a VOS is weather or a home job, not factory aging. A signature on the front rubs under the forearm; a thin nitro coat from a Gibson tech has protected it for owners.
