About the Gibson SG Special Faded
The SG Special Faded arrived in 2002 as a lower-cost SG Special, the saving made mainly in the finish: thin satin nitro over stain, open-pored with no grain filler, in Worn Cherry or Worn Brown. It keeps a solid mahogany body and set mahogany neck, 22 medium jumbo frets on a 24.75 inch scale with a 12 inch radius, and a nut about 1 11/16 inch (43 mm) wide, made in Nashville. Two uncovered 490R and 490T humbuckers sit on a large black pickguard, with two volume and two tone controls, a three-way switch, a Tune-O-Matic and a stop bar. A three-pickup version has three 490s, one volume, one tone and a six-way rotary selector. The serial's first and fifth digits give the year (025380371 is a 2008).
The board is the change to know: 2002 and 2003 examples have an unbound ebony board with crescent moon inlays; during 2004 it became rosewood with dots. Weighed examples come in at about 6.2 to 7.4 lb (2.8 to 3.4 kg), most under 7 lb, and necks measure about 0.80 to 0.84 inch deep at the first fret and 0.93 to 0.98 inch at the 12th. It came with a padded Gibson gig bag. Check the headstock for a repaired break, and expect the thin finish to show use: shiny patches where the arm rests, buckle marks, spots worn through. Owners often swap pickups, tuners and wiring, so ask whether the originals come along.
