About the Gibson Les Paul Deluxe
The Les Paul Deluxe pairs two mini-humbuckers with a mahogany body and maple top, a bound rosewood board with trapezoid inlays, 22 frets, a 24.75 inch scale and a 1 11/16 inch nut. Dated originals run from 1969 to 1981. Those from 1971 to 1976 have the layered pancake body; the neck is three-piece mahogany on 1971 to 1974 examples and three-piece maple from 1976 to 1981, with a volute from 1972. Kluson Deluxe double-ring tuners appear from 1971 to 1978, and a Nashville bridge takes the place of the patent-number ABR-1 from 1975. Six-digit serials only give a span of years, so the pots date them: CTS code 1377331 is the 31st week of 1973. Original pickups carry a patent number, plus an ink date on 1979 to 1981 ones. Besides Goldtop, Cherry Sunburst appears from 1973, Wine Red from 1975.
Weighed 1969 to 1975 examples run about 9 to 10.2 lb (4.1 to 4.6 kg), most under 10; 1976 to 1981 ones 9.6 to 11.2 lb (4.3 to 5.1 kg). Necks measure 0.79 to 0.86 inch deep at the first fret and 0.92 to 1.03 at the 12th. Cases of 1971 and 1972 are black with purple lining. Many have been refretted with taller wire than the low, flat originals; refinished tops, Grover or Schaller tuners, other pickups (some in routed cavities), a missing pickguard and a repaired crack below the volute are common. The 2015 Gibson USA version adds G Force robot tuners (often swapped out), an adjustable zero-fret nut, coil splits and a 15 dB boost.
