About the Gibson Les Paul Goldtop
The Goldtop is the original Les Paul: it came out in 1952 with a gold top over a mahogany body with a maple cap, and on most the back and neck are natural mahogany. Guitars under this name are 1950s originals, Custom Shop reissues of them and a later double-cutaway run. The first 1952 version had a trapeze tailpiece; 1954 examples have a stud-mounted wraparound tailpiece in its place, and by 1956 it had an ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic bridge with a stop tailpiece, still with two P-90s. In 1957 two humbuckers replaced the P-90s.
The Custom Shop reissues follow those years: '54 and '56 reissues carry Custom P-90s, '57 reissues CustomBucker humbuckers. They have a solid mahogany body, a hide-glued long-tenon neck joint, a chunky 1950s neck profile, Kluson tuners and a truss rod without the tubing. Weighed solid-body reissues come in at about 8.25 to 9.3 lb (3.7 to 4.2 kg). Recent ones come in a brown/pink Lifton reissue case with a certificate of authenticity. Besides the standard gold, reissues come in a darker Double Gold or with a dark back, and Murphy Lab versions are aged at the factory, from Light Aged to Ultra Heavy Aged. The double-cutaway Goldtop, dated 2009 and 2011, has a chambered mahogany body with a maple top, a slim '60s neck, two P-90s and one volume and one tone control.
