About the Gibson Les Paul Junior Double Cutaway
The double cut Les Paul Junior has a slab mahogany body, a mahogany neck joining at the 22nd fret, one P-90 at the bridge with one volume and one tone control, and a wraparound bridge on a 24.75 inch scale.
The original ran from 1958 to 1961. The earliest, from late 1958, carry a four-digit ink-stamped serial, and early bodies have squarer edges than later ones. Vintage examples are usually cherry, often faded, with a tortoise pickguard, Kluson single-line tuners and a bumblebee capacitor. Necks measure about 0.88 to 0.90 inch deep at the first fret and 0.95 to 1.00 inch at the 12th, flatter and slimmer on 1960 and early 1961 examples; weighed ones run 6.4 to 7.8 lb (2.9 to 3.5 kg). They came in a chipboard case; many now have a later hardshell. Common repairs: headstock cracks and breaks are a common repair and some have a heel break; many are refretted; Grover or Schaller tuners leave bushings or extra holes; the black jack plate often broke; some were routed for a humbucker; refinishes and overspray turn up; a compensated wraparound is the usual bridge swap.
Late 1980s reissues usually have a Tune-O-Matic and stopbar instead. A limited run around 2010 and 2011 came in gloss Cherry or TV Yellow with a lightning bar wraparound. Current production has a SlimTaper neck, a 1.69 inch Graph Tech nut, Vintage Deluxe tuners with white buttons and a dogear P-90 hand-wired with an Orange Drop capacitor, in Vintage Cherry, TV Yellow or Ebony, with a Gibson hardshell case.
