About the Tokai Love Rock LS-95

The LS-95 is the Vintage Series Love Rock of roughly 2007 to 2011, the LS85 (and LS85Q) renumbered as the yen list price rose, the same guitar that went on to be the LS98 and LS100 and is the LS-101 today; the 1999 catalogues list no LS95, whatever a London shop called the one it sold that year. It came as a gold top and in flame and quilt, the Q a few thousand yen dearer than the F, with a 2009 silver top as a custom colour for UK export under the dimpled headstock. The neck on 2011-12 guitars is big and chunky, and the stock pickups turn out to be Arctec-made under the covers. Owners date theirs from 2008 to 2012.

The best-priced as cards, a row of them; every other ad as a line, by ask. Each ask is the seller’s own number; the platform’s mark opens the listing. Each one says when we last confirmed it at its source: the price and availability are from that visit, so check the marketplace before you go.

No typical price yet for this one, so: one email when a new listing appears, with its ask. Never more than one a day. No account; a link to stop in every email.

Every recorded sale, one point each: 9 of them, placed by the day the ad went up. Too few sales to draw a trend through them without inventing one, so the points speak for themselves. Condition is mixed, so some of the spread is a mint against a fair rather than the market moving.

What owners have said elsewhere

Paraphrased from 15 discussion threads among 15 owners, 2021-2026. No names, nothing quoted.

The LS-95 is bought by choice rather than as a stand-in: one owner who could have had a Gibson says the Tokai is better finished and better value, a professional tech rates it above contemporary Gibsons, another simply loves it, and the big 2011-12 neck profile is a favourite. The stock Arctec pickups run hot and compressed to one tech's ear, Suhr, Seymour Duncan Custom and EMG sets were tried before Seymour Duncan 59s with swapped magnets stuck, alnico 3 in the neck against mud and rough-cast alnico 5 in the bridge against harshness, alongside stainless frets, CTS pots, mustard caps and Switchcraft parts, while an owner of an older Love Rock who fitted alnico 2 Duncans says the originals were fine too. A gold top was sourced new from a Japanese dealer in 2023, one of the biggest, shipping to Europe in three or four days.
