About the Gibson '61 SG Reissue
The '61 SG Reissue is a Gibson USA production model made in Nashville, not a Custom Shop guitar, recreating the first-year 1961 SG Standard. Dated examples run from 1993 to 2012. It has a solid mahogany body with deep bevels, a one-piece mahogany neck with a 1960s SlimTaper carve that meets the body at the 22nd fret, and a bound rosewood board with trapezoid inlays and 22 medium jumbo frets on a 12 inch radius. The small five-ply pickguard, the wider early headstock, two '57 Classic humbuckers with Alnico II magnets, a Tune-O-Matic with stop bar and Gibson Deluxe tuners with keystone buttons complete it. The usual finish is Heritage Cherry in gloss nitrocellulose.
It ended in 2012; the 2013 SG Standard took over its small pickguard, '57 Classics and neck joint, but not the wider headstock. Weighed examples come in at about 6 to 7.9 lb (2.75 to 3.6 kg), most between 6.5 and 7.5 lb. Necks measure about 0.76 to 0.82 inch deep at the first fret and 0.87 to 0.91 inch at the 12th, and nuts about 1.69 inch (43 mm) wide. On the serial the first and fifth digits give the year (92317349 is a 1997). It came in a Gibson hardshell case with a white plush lining and a factory checklist card. Replacement tuners are the most common change and some have had a Bigsby or other vibrato fitted, so ask for the original parts and look for extra screw holes. Several have had neck or headstock repairs; check the joint.
