About the Gibson SG Classic
The SG Classic is a P-90 SG modeled on the 1960s SG Special: a solid mahogany body, a set mahogany neck, a bound rosewood board with dot inlays and two P-90s. It has a Tune-O-Matic bridge and stop tailpiece, a wide black five-ply batwing pickguard and a mother-of-pearl headstock logo, with 22 medium jumbo frets on a 24.75 inch scale, a 12 inch radius and a 1 11/16 inch (43 mm) nut. Production began in 1999, and it is no longer made. Most were sold new with a Gibson gig bag, not a hard case.
The neck is fuller and rounder than a slim taper, between a 1950s and a 1960s profile, and varies from guitar to guitar: about 0.81 to 0.87 inch deep at the first fret and 0.95 to 1.02 inch at the 12th. Weighed examples come in at about 6.5 to 7.9 lb (2.9 to 3.6 kg), most around 7 lb. Bodies come in one, two or three pieces. The usual finish is Heritage Cherry gloss nitro, which often checks, and the neck binding is often cream or yellowed. Most have Gibson Deluxe tuners with white buttons, and swapping them, usually for Grovers, is the most common change. Owners also rewire with 500K pots and new capacitors, fit other P-90s, a Bigsby or other vibrato and witch hat knobs, and swap the truss rod cover that reads Classic for a plain one. Chipped headstock tips and veneer, and repaired headstock breaks, turn up.
