About the Gibson SG Junior
The SG Junior is the plainest SG: a mahogany body and set neck, a rosewood board with dot inlays and 22 frets on a 24.75 inch scale, one dogear P-90 at the bridge, one volume and one tone control and a wraparound bridge. Weighed examples, old and new, come in at about 5.2 to 6.6 lb (2.4 to 3.0 kg), with necks about 0.76 to 0.84 inch deep at the first fret.
It replaced the Les Paul Junior as the student model in 1961; examples into 1963 still carry the Les Paul name. The 1960s ones were made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, with a Brazilian rosewood board and necks from medium C to fuller D shapes; the nut is 1 11/16 inch through 1964, narrowing during 1965 to 1 5/8 and then 1 9/16 inch. Cherry was standard, Polaris White a custom color, and some had a factory Maestro Vibrola, often since removed. Serials can point to two years and refinishes often hide them, so pot date codes confirm the year. Check for headstock and heel repairs; original pickguards often lift or crack at the screws. They came in a chipboard case.
Current production, from 2018, is made in the USA with a Vintage Cherry nitro finish, a SlimTaper neck, a 1.695 inch Graph Tech nut, hand-wired controls with an Orange Drop capacitor and Vintage Deluxe tuners, in a Gibson hardshell case with a multi-tool and paperwork. The usual change on any year is a compensated wraparound that intonates with a plain G string; ask for the original bridge.
