About the Tokai Love Rock LS85

The LS85 is the Vintage Series Love Rock of the 2000s, the two-piece-back catalogue model until its 2010 list price rose from 85,000 to 92,000 yen and it became the LS92; the number is the yen price, so the same guitar wears different numbers in different years. It is a polyurethane finish (a 1980 LS80 was nitro, a 2009 LS85 is poly) without the long-tenon tongue of the Premium models, with F for a flame veneer, Q for quilt and S for the P90 gold top; finishes seen are gold top, heritage dark cherry burst and a silver top made as a custom export colour under the dimpled headstock. The pickups are a Seymour Duncan 59 and JB set, and the model is written in the neck-pickup cavity. Owners date theirs from 2003 to 2012.

The best-priced as cards, a row of them; every other ad as a line, by ask. Each ask is the seller’s own number; the platform’s mark opens the listing. Each one says when we last confirmed it at its source: the price and availability are from that visit, so check the marketplace before you go.

No typical price yet for this one, so: one email when a new listing appears, with its ask. Never more than one a day. No account; a link to stop in every email.

Every recorded sale, one point each: 8 of them, placed by the day the ad went up. Too few sales to draw a trend through them without inventing one, so the points speak for themselves. Condition is mixed, so some of the spread is a mint against a fair rather than the market moving.

What owners have said elsewhere

Paraphrased from 12 discussion threads among 19 owners, 2021-2025. No names, nothing quoted.

One owner sold a 2012 LS85 for a Gibson R8 and regretted it, the lower-spec Tokai felt more like home than the high-end Gibson, and is back in the Tokai camp; a 2008 makes its owner very happy, and a refitted LS85F is said to look classier than a Gibson, to sound exceptional, and by one voice to have come out better than a Gibson. The Duncan 59/JB set is what gets changed: Seth Lovers on one, Gibson 57 underwound and 57 Plus with a 50s wiring harness, Orange Drop cap, Switchcraft toggle and Gibson vintage tuners on another (a tremendous change in sound and sustain, its owner says), Bare Knuckle Stormy Mondays with 50s wiring and Gibson plastics on a third; Gotoh tuners are the drop-in choice when the originals need replacing without new holes.
