About the Tokai Love Rock LS-80
In Tokai's late-1970s Les Paul range the LS-80 is where the vintage-correct specification begins: an 18-degree headstock, nitrocellulose lacquer and nickel hardware, against the poly finish, 14-degree headstock and chrome of the LS-50 and LS-60 below it. It shipped with Gotoh PAF-style humbuckers, the DiMarzios only arrived at the LS-100, under a plain or lightly figured solid two-piece maple cap, with bound fret ends. Owners rank the 1978-1980 LS-80 among the golden-era models worth seeking out, and call it the flagship that made Tokai's name.
The same guitar wore three headstock names: Les Paul Reborn (1978-79), Reborn Old (a few months of 1980) and Love Rock from 1980 on; the Reborn-badged ones fetch more. The vintage run spans 1978 to 1985, and the name returned on a Japanese-made LS-80 through the 2000s and early 2010s, with a slimmer 60s-style neck where the vintage ones are fatter. By 1984 the specification had drifted, a thin figured veneer over the maple, a stamped letter D on some fingerboards, and owners tell a mid-80s LS-50, 60 and 80 apart by nibs, veneer and finish rather than by the catalogue. Hardware is metric, so a replacement bridge needs metric posts. Until mid-1980 the model number was stamped into the fingerboard behind the last fret; later examples carry it on a headstock sticker or in the pickup cavity.

The best-priced as cards, a row of them; every other ad as a line, by ask. Each ask is the seller’s own number; the platform’s mark opens the listing. Each one says when we last confirmed it at its source: the price and availability are from that visit, so check the marketplace before you go.
Price history
Every recorded sale, one point each: 35 of them, placed by the day the ad went up. Too few sales to draw a trend through them without inventing one, so the points speak for themselves. Condition is mixed, so some of the spread is a mint against a fair rather than the market moving.

What owners have said elsewhere
Paraphrased from 90 discussion threads among 44 owners, 2021-2026. No names, nothing quoted.
Owners date their vintage LS-80s from 1978 to 1985, with 2000s examples alongside, and the praise is broad: build, sustain and comfort, and several say it outplays the Gibsons they own or have owned, custom-shop ones included; more than one calls it the best guitar they have owned, and selling one is a regret repeated across the threads. Two weighed examples span 3.6 to 4.7 kg. The stock Gotoh pickups divide the room, many have swapped in boutique PAF-style sets and report the guitar opening up, while others say the originals beat a modern Gibson's and should stay. Not everyone is converted: one owner sold a 1981 that did nothing special for him, and another finds his 1980 quiet and unresonant beside his LS160S. Buyers are told to look for the Made in Japan line on the headstock: a 2010 reissue shares serial ranges with 1981 and carries it, and a 1981 never did.
