About the Epiphone Zakk Wylde Signature Les Paul Custom
The Zakk Wylde Signature Les Paul Custom is a Les Paul Custom with a mahogany body, a carved top, a set hard maple neck, a rosewood board with pearl block inlays, 22 frets on a 24.75 inch scale and a 1 11/16 inch (43 mm) nut, multi-ply binding throughout and a split-diamond headstock inlay. Gold hardware includes Grover tuners and a LockTone Tune-O-Matic bridge with stopbar; there are two volume and two tone controls and a three-way switch. The neck has a SlimTaper C profile and an unstained satin or unfinished back, not gloss. Limited editions include the Camo Bullseye, with a maple fingerboard, and the orange and black Buzzsaw with chrome hardware. The model is discontinued.
Earlier ones were made in Korea at the Unsung and Saein factories, with dated examples from 2003; production later moved to China. The original pickups are passive EMG HZ humbuckers (HZ-H4 bridge, HZ-H4A neck), while later Chinese-made ones, sold as the Custom Plus, came with active EMG 81/85 pickups on a 9-volt battery. A common change is swapping the HZ set for active 81/85s. Weighed examples come in at about 8.4 to 9.7 lb (3.8 to 4.4 kg), and many come with an Epiphone hard case. Gold plating tarnishes with age, the tuners first, and finish checking turns up, often near the switch or the knobs. Refurbished factory returns carry a USED or 2nd stamp on the back of the headstock and a replacement serial number.
