About the Tokai Love Rock LS-214

The LS214 is the Premium Series Love Rock of the early 2020s, the same guitar as the LS196 before it, renumbered as the yen list price rose to 214,000, and since the 2024 renumbering the LS-201. The specification: a two-piece Canadian maple top on a one-piece African mahogany back, a one-piece mahogany neck set with a deep joint, Tokai's long tenon, whose tongue reaches into the neck-pickup cavity on the Premium Series; it is shorter than Gibson's, and the Vintage Series has the joint without the tongue, an asymmetric U profile, 22 medium-jumbo Sanko frets over the binding on a 625 mm scale, a 43 mm bone nut, an Indian rosewood board, Gotoh SD90-SL tuners, Tokai's HLS-VB bridge with brass saddles and HLS-VT aluminium tailpiece, PAF-Vintage MK2 alnico 5 pickups, CTS pots, orange-drop capacitors, Switchcraft jack and switch, and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. Tops are plain in the 1958 manner, violin finish, cherry sunburst, gold top and Anaconda burst, and one weighs about 4 kg (8.8 lb), squarely in the range of the late-1950s Gibsons. Owners date theirs 2023 and 2024. Tokai still takes custom orders direct: one owner emailed at the end of 2024 and had an LS214 made in a finish outside the catalogue.

Every recorded sale, one point each: 22 of them, placed by the day the ad went up. Too few sales to draw a trend through them without inventing one, so the points speak for themselves. Condition is mixed, so some of the spread is a mint against a fair rather than the market moving.

What owners have said elsewhere

Paraphrased from 28 discussion threads among 35 owners, 2023-2026. No names, nothing quoted.

The LS214 is called one of the best guitars its owner has had, a 2024 example its owner's favourite guitar ever, and a pro-level instrument in the class of a Gibson R7 or R8; craftsmanship is rated above the Gibsons its owners also have, playability near perfect out of the box, and the spec is called the best-value Les Paul in the world, close to 1958-59 at a fraction of a Historic or a Navigator. The dissent: one collector dismisses every post-1985 Tokai as the product of a different, mid-grade company, a view the rest of the thread rejects; one owner finds a Gibson more Les Paul-like in feel, another found the strings stiffer than on a Gibson until the stop bar was raised, and one found the sound a little dark until the capacitors were changed. The PAF-Vintage MK2 pickups split the room: one owner loves them enough to hunt a second set and another prefers them to Bare Knuckle Stormy Mondays, while swappers fit Wizz (the most named), Bare Knuckle Mules, DiMarzio, Cream T Whiskerbuckers, EMG Retro Actives, Retronom or hand-wound 57 replicas, with the advice to try the originals uncovered first. Owners buy direct from Japan, reckoned 25-30 per cent cheaper than Reverb or eBay, and the 2024 models arrived with big price increases.
